1  Drag Talk / The (VW) Speed Channel / Re: Lyle Cherry on: July 02, 2013, 10:41:46 PM
I just found these pics that are from a display at the recent European Bug-In 5, that was held in Chimay, Belgium.

In addition to the pics, there is a cool online article about Lyle at this link. The Hefler and Cherry car is now part of the B.B.T. collection in Belgium.

Hey Bill,

Could it be Leroy Blackwood's old car, that is pictured below?

If so, you can find a few more pics and info the thread at http://www.speedshots.net/tvwdra/forum/index.php?topic=778.0

Stuttgary Express then (late 70's, I believe) and now (2012, with some aging via Photoshop):

4  Drag Talk / The (VW) Speed Channel / Restoring the "Stuttgart Express" on: August 10, 2012, 10:34:06 AM
Bill Stipe (aka "pepsiblue" here) asked me to post about his most recent project - a very nicely restored K/Gas racer with a lot of Texas history. Bill plans to run the car at a future TVWDRA race when his schedule permits.

The "Stuttgart Express" is a racer formerly run back in the 70's in the AHRA K/Gas class, where it garnered a few world records back in the day. The car was originally built and run by Lee and Glen Williams, from the San Antonio area. In later years, the car turned into the Sudden Impact turbo car of Charlie Dickerson.

Bill has done an awesome job on the car. To check out the build thread, see this link (you've got to register/login to see the pics, but it's well worth it).

I got to see the car in person last weekend at Prairie Hill Dragway, where David "Pappy" Crow was making shakedown passes on the car with Bill and crew.

I've heard about Prairie Hill for a number of years, but had never been there, despite the fact that it was only ~1.5 hours from my house. Now I know that I've been missing out, as the track is very cool and laid back, as are the people that I met/saw there.

On to the pics!

American Hotrod Association (AHRA) K/Gas

Prairie Hill is an old airfield with two long runways that are positioned at ~45 degree angles to each other (I think). One of the runways is used for 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag racing, while the other is used by racers to warm up their cars and make short test passes. The next couple of shots show the Stuttgart Express crew making changes to the car after David did a little testing.

IIRC, this is a 2180cc motor that Les Fryar built with a bunch of period correct go-fast parts. It looks and runs great.

David Crow and Lee Williams. Lee is Glen Williams brother and the original builder of the Stuttgart Express. It was so cool to meet Lee and listen to the stories that he told about the car.

Pappy and his famous cowboy hat

Getting ready to make another test run down the secondary strip, as Lee watches.

This car is spotless and super detailed, inside and out!

Gotta' love a chop top gasser!

Getting buckled up to make the first past after rebirth. David had said that he was going to take it easy and see how things felt once he got going a little faster.

The first burnout, with proud papa Bill Stipe in the background

Wheels up! (this doesn't look like an easy pass to me Grin - it was a solid 7.37 eighth mile pass) I hate that I missed this shot - it's my fault for not first checking with the starter and knowing where I could shoot from, and scrambling to move from the return road in front of the car, to a decent spot on track behind it.

Nose down now, but that's soon to change...

Vroom, vroom!

Pappy - minus the hat and Volkswagen

Cool down and wheelie bar adjustment

A (wrenching) father and son moment Grin

Smoke 'em if you've got 'em!

David and Lee talk about favorite recipies, while Bill gets dirty Wink

Fiddin' to do it again

Wheelie bars adjusted as high as they'd go this time, to prevent the excessive squat that they were causing. I hoped for a sky high launch and an attempt to make up for my earlier missed shot, but that didn't happen this time.

The gang's all here - Stuttgart Express crew

Clay made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Thank you for that Clay.

I hope that whoever won the handmade, wood-burned VW clock that Clay made for the 2005 TVWDRA Awards Banquet cherishes it even more now.

The box says made in Germany.

Looks like the blue and white KS label with the hologram says "Kolbenschmidt Brasil".

I got my main bearings for my new motor.

I've heard that many of the KS main bearings now avail are simply repackaged Mahle versions, and that the bearings themselves are marked as Mahle.

Take a look at yours to see if they've got this marking, and whether the center main is steel backed or not.

Jack - I believe that the key here is German Kolbenschmidt versus Brazillian Kolbenschmidt. Based on the more official looking of the labels on the photo of your KS bearings, it looks like they may be the Brazillian version.

If anyone is interested maybe we could all chip-in a few bucks and ask Eric to print that photo on the home page and send it to his family. Maybe Zach or Carl could take it to them? Just thinking out loud.

Thoughts??

If anyone is going to chip in, I'd rather that you donate the money to a charity in Troy's name, or give it Troy's family so that they can do something with it.

I'll gladly print/provide photos and can mail them if need be.

Damn. I hate it when bad things happen to good people like you, Troy.

The Ellis family is pulling for you, and you're in our thoughts and prayers. If you need anything from me, please don't hesitate to ask.

As some of you have noticed, the Drag Talk forum has been getting a ton of traffic and new members over the last couple of months.

99.9 percent of the new folks have been spammers/bots, and I'd set up the registration process so that I had to manually approve new members, instead of the auto-approval process of old.

This got to be an arduous task w/15-20 new member approval requests daily. I'd often just reject the bulk of them in mass, as I could cross reference email addresses and/or IP addresses with known spammers.

I made another change to the forum yesterday, and I hope that this one will eliminate or reduce the number of the "fake" new members/spammers.
