USS '09 Race Results & PICS
« on: October 19, 2009, 10:39:09 PM »

Well, the 1st Annual Unlimited Street South race is officially in the books!  Although the car count was a little down, everyone had positive things to say about the event, and there is already excitement about next year's event(s)!

Here's the run down on the event:

The Cruise: 5 participants entered the 23 mile cruise, with only 4 surviving and returning to the track.  Shane Smith in his beautiful orange '67 had the misfortune of his fuel pump failing!  Fortunately it was just after leaving the track, so he was able to limp it back.  Carl Nolen tells me that he too barely made it as his fuel tank was completely DRY when he got back to the pits!

Qualifying: Carl Nolen led qualifying with a stellar 10.48 @ 127 in his nitrous-assisted ride.  Tom Funnel was #2 in his normally aspirated ride, Emmanuel Sarger was #3 in his normally aspirated ride, and Mike Cummings rounded out qualifying with his turbo split.

Eliminations: Round 1: Tom's 12.72 beats Emmanuell's 14.50, while Carl beats Mike with a MASSIVE holeshot, 12.13 to Mike's quicker, but later 11.71.

In the finals, Carl's car slows to a 12.57, but it was enough to hold off Tom's 12.64!

BTW, Tom's car ran between a 12.58 and a 12.74 all day long, so, congrats Tom on having the most consistent car there!

Now for the Good Stuff:

Carl Nolen: Winner
□   $350 CASH
□   $100 Gift Certificate to JayCee Enterprises
□   5 Gallons VP C-16 provided by The Bug Stop
□   Gift Certificate for a case of LAT Oil
□   #1 Qualifier Award: $50 Gift Certificate to FastTimeDesigns
□   $100 CASH for having the quickest AND fastest nitrous car, provided by The Nitrous Outlet
□   $50 CASH for The Bounty Hunter Award, provided by Vintage V-Dub Works
□   $50 CASH for the Best Reaction Time, provided by Vintage V-Dub Works
Tom Funnell: Runner Up
□   $200 CASH
□   $50 Gift Certificate to JayCee Enterprises
□   $100 CASH for having the quickest AND fastest normally aspirated car, provide by GEERS Engineering
□   $50 CASH for the People’s Choice award, provided by The Bug Stop
Mike Cummings: Semi Finalist
□   $75 CASH
□   $150 CASH for the quickest AND fastest turbo car, provided by TurbosDirect
□   $100 CASH for the Longest Tow award, provided by CADPRO Motorsports
Emmanuel Sarger: Semi Finalist
□   $75 CASH

As always, we could not have done this with out the help and support of some great sponsors.  They include:

David Crow – Crow Racing Transmissions – Hutto, TX

Please visit these sponsors and THANK THEM for helping to make Unlimited Street South 2009 a success!

On a personal note, I’d like to give Carl Nolen a big THANK YOU for taking care of things on race day in my absence.  Your dedication to the VW drag racing scene is inspiring.  Also, to my bud David Peppin, who volunteered to help out any way he could.  I think we may have even been able to convert a die-hard V8 guy into a VW fan  Wink

Lets do it again next year!

USS was definitely a very cool deal, and I was glad to got the chance to see it up close and personal

Here are a few shots that I took, while risking life and limb hanging out of car windows and dodging parts flying across the track... Cheesy

Stay tuned - more to come!

You guys are impatient. I was getting ready to launch when the starter tapped on the side glass and told me the light was green. GEEZ, everybody's always in a hurry.

Yes, an incredible job to Chad, David, and that photo guy risking life and limb for a "perfect shot". Great job Eric. I did think it was very funny watching you hang out the window to take pics and jumping out of the car anytime we stopped or turned anywhere, lol. I'm going to make a T shirt "I Survived the USS Cruise of 2009" haha.

I was very lucky Mike. My car was wounded and relied a lot on RT to get me through. That's racing. I did pull the plugs last night and looked ok. Leakdown sucked but maybe enough for one more race in Temple. Not enough time to re-ring it unless I pull another all night-er, lol. My knees are hurting just thinking about it.

No excuses here Carl. If your car had been 100%, none of us could have come close anyway. I really enjoyed the change of pace for the racing at the Motorplex. I am already checking my engine out to see how many nuts and bolts might be loose from the weekend. I can see from one of Eric's photos that I need to beef up the rear suspension with some better shocks.

Chad, thanks for the new class to race in. A BIG THANKS to everybody associated with it.

Thanks Chad for organizing the race, and to all the sponsors that participated in. Hats off to Carl and Dave ( well I don't have a hat as nice as "Texas  Tom" but you get the gesture)for their work.  It was a blast.  Thank you Eric for risking your life for those great pix.  Now if I could get my car to be faster for next year....
