As a lot of people know, the VW community lost LeeRoy Blackwood on Labor Day weekend in 2002. LeeRoy and his wife Terry were the owners of Knight's Foreign Auto Parts in Garland Texas. Our loss of LeeRoy at a very young age in an automobile accident and the closing of Knight's have greatly impacted us. Knight's sponsored my car from 1988 until it's closing in 2003. It was a very good run for 15 years. They are the main reason I am where I am in performance and enabled me to run all the years and have success. I won the bug-in right after LeeRoy's passing and this has been special to me ever since. I have kept in contact with several people around the VW community since then including Judy Kawell of Kawell Racing Engines.
Back in the eary 90's, LeeRoy went turbo on his race car and looked up the Kawells for advice. A friendship and working relationship developed. After LeeRoy's passing, I contacted Judy Kawell by e-mail to share info and have shared several e-mails since. A few weeks ago, I e-mailed her with some more news. She returned the e-mail with an idea to remember LeeRoy and Knight's. Knight's had sponsored the bracket class at the bug-ins seems like forever. I won the last Knight's sponsored bracket class at a bug-in. We decided the best time to remember LeeRoy and Knight's was at the fall bug-in.
So begining with the fall bug-in in 2006, Dave and Judy Kawell of Kawell Racing Engines will award the winner of the bracket class $250.00 cash. The winner will also receive an remembrance plaque. It will read:
LeeRoy Blackwood-Knight's Foreign Auto Parts Remembrance and Appreciation Award
2006 BIG BUG SHOOTOUT Bracket Class Winner
Presented by Dave and Judy Kawell-Kawell Racing Engines
Thank you very much Dave and Judy for your kind and generous prize. This will be an on going prize. Carl Nolen That was last years post I had made on the Knight's award for the Fall bug-in. And yes, the award will be presented again this year to the Winner of the Bracket Class. This year, Terry Blackwood and Troy Goodwin (LeeRoy's nephew) will be presenting the award. Terry along with Kawell Racing Engine are combining for a $400.00 prize and a plaque to the winner of the bracket class. This is a very cool way to remember LeeRoy and Knights as being a major influence to drag racing over the years in this area. The Knight's Car, Carl Nolen
